Why Black Males Must Act On Their High Blood Pressure
If you are an African American male you probably already know that you are at higher risk for hypertension than white or Hispanic males. But did you know that you are as much as 50% to 100% more likely to have the condition? You have a special need to know how to lower your blood pressure to guard against a condition that you are predisposed to having.
Not only are African American males more likely to be hypertensive, they are likely to have that condition earlier in life than their white male contemporaries and they have a more difficult time controlling it. As a result, they are more likely to die younger than whites with the same condition. Why this occurs is not known. Unlike sickle cell anemia, there isn't a single gene that can be identified to explain this phenomenon.
So what is a Black man to do? For sure he needs to watch his weight, get plenty of daily aerobic exercise and try to manage stress better than others.
High blood pressure doesn't occur overnight. It may take years of abusing the blood vessels before the condition shows any symptoms and unfortunately those symptoms are the serious kind like heart attack, stroke, blindness and kidney failure. Basically, because of lifestyle choices, our blood vessels become stiff causing the heart to have to pump harder which increases pressure. Aside from simply taking the elasticity out of the vessels, blood pressure is aggravated by plaque build up which further restricts the flow of blood and again causes the heart to pump harder.
Eventually either a vessel is completely blocked and it starts starving the cells it feeds, or the heart muscle becomes weak and fails. Either way it does not bode well.
The good news is that you may not have to take blood pressure medication. Drugs come with some nasty side effects like a frequent urge to urinate, low libido, fatigue, light headiness to even more drastic effects like congestive heart failure.
The American Heart Association endorses an approach that encourages a change in diet, regular exercise and stress management over the use of medication. The DASH diet is a tested diet that can effectively lower pressure up to 20 points. It is full of fresh foods that are high in antioxidants and minerals. Following this diet along with some exercise can quickly lower blood pressure.
