Text Motif: The Tao of Writing
I remember when I tried to get a job at one of those online content-mills. Wow, was I floored when they rejected my work. After calming down and reading what I submitted, I had no choice left but to laugh my head off: I laughed for a good two or three minutes. The article I submitted was simultaneously the worst and funnies thing I had read in a long time.
That article was called, "The life-cycle of a Housefly." A topic assigned to me by the content-mill, and one I would not dream up in a million years. My favorite part, upon perusing my rejected masterpiece, and the thing that kept me laughing, was this tasty description of houseflies:
"They are quick. They are annoying. They land on our food and throw up."
I can't believe I wrote that! I laughed so hard tears rolled down my cheeks. That article was terrible, and I know why. It was all my fault. I committed a sin especially poignant for writers. I tried to squeeze into a mold, a prefab world, and there I made a prefab thing. Trying to do the same thing everyone else is doing is a writer's death, and it's a lesson writers are occasionally reminded of. I realized I was out of practice and needed to brush-up.
Over the months, I have also thought about the prolific growth of writers on the Internet. Where did they all come from? Twenty years ago, I was one of a handful of writers in a large Southeastern United States metropolis. Ten years ago, I was still only one of a handful of writers. It was not until the Internet opened the doors of publication to people all over the world that writers became common.
Does that mean there's a lot more competition? Yes, it does. In addition, the required standards lower as demand soars. The term ‘how to write' gets just under 25,000,000 searches a year, while ‘writing a book' gets just over 2,000,000.
Today, months after laughing over that article, I remembered something about writers: Personal-style adds color to writing. Without it, writing is dry, bland, or awkward. Many writers are stuck in the rut of stylized writing: They follow the patterns and rules of English as if the language is set in stone. An attempt at poetics is very therapeutic for stuck writers
In fact, the dictionary is updated every year because colloquial usage changes frequently. A good deal of writers could benefit by experiencing the Tao of Writing: Sometimes referred to as The Movement of Water.
From the extremes of Jack Kerouac and his lucid free-writing, to Charles Bukowski and his filthily-detailed mind, writing can be a real adventure for anyone. Kerouac and Bukowski are two examples of writers who knew English well enough to break it. Kerouac threw traditional grammar out the window, and Bukowski threw away social sensitivities.
We can easily see that some of the greatest writers were rejected many times. When asked, Charles Bukowski said he used his rejection slips as toilet paper. Current trends often resist trail-breakers, and a good writer invariably blazes new trails. Breaking through to the other-side of writing is not the easiest thing to do, none the less, we are writers with a writer's mind. So, let's take a look into the guts of fluid writing.
Fluid writing requires a flagrant disregard of literary authority and accepted practices of the day. Unlike a bucking wild mare, there is a dull lethargic mule inside each and every writer. It is our obligation to spur some life into that mule. That mule is our writers mind. A course or two in active-poetics (not Poetry 101) could unstrap your creative wings, without the need to go on a drinking-binge down the railway tracks of some countryside.
Writing that goes through a process of fermentation always tastes better than seeds not yet sprouted.
Writing and painting are distant cousins. In the case of writing, blank paper is the canvas and picture-words are the paint. Our goal as an artist (and that is the best definition of any true writer), is to animate an entire world or idea: Even if that world or idea lasts for only a moment. Poetry is method of writing that seeks to saturate the senses with graphic and detailed information. Sometimes a piece of poetry is only a brief recollection of some fleeting sensation. Before writing your next piece, why not warm up with a poem?

Practice makes perfect (but that's not the point). The act of writing poetry is more important than the result produced. Breaking free from the shackles of expectation-based writing can open new vistas of creativity. (Expectation-based writing is writing as a reaction to the expectations of the outside world.)
The Tao of Writing is like water and its movement. My poem above is about the natural movement of water around obstacles. Looking into your mind for a moment, try to see a brook or other winding passage of water. See how the water ebbs, flows, and follows the unseen force of gravity? Since you have a winding brook in your mind already, zoom in and see the small brown-gray boulder in the middle of the brook. Yes, the one with green and brown algae at the water-line. Forget about the pretty algae for a moment, and focus on the movement of the water. Look closely, and you will notice the water naturally moves around the boulder. It doesn't try to bash or drill through the boulder.
Water is wiser than that. It simply moves around an obstacle. So it is with writing. Instead of sending an idea or world through a machine of cogs, we writers should strive to mimic the graceful flow of water.
The movement of water turns writers block into something of a fictitious ailment. Writers block only occurs when we keep trying to write about something out of season. The movement of water tells us to go around the topic and write about something else. We can return to it later.
Writing is a fluid movement and the wanderings of our mind while writing should be too. If you're stuck caught in a furrow, remember the movement of water and go around your obstacle. When we mimic the behavior of water, learning to move with less friction, amazing destinations can be found!
Reading some Beat Writers, as well as classics like The Old Man and The Sea, opens our mind. (The Old Man and The Sea,by Hemingway, is a particularly moving tale.) Great writers have the ability to draw us into their world. By extension, they teach us the process of trans-dimensional perception. If a writer knows how to see trans-dimensionally, or into a working model of another reality, they can then transport their own readers into another world. C.S. Lewis was able to catch the imagination of millions of children when he wrote The Chronicles of Narnia. He was able to see clearly into those imaginative worlds with his mind, and could therefore lead the active-imagination of many children into that colorful dimension.
Breaking out of the mold is a reasonable and healthy goal for all writers. It requires broader reading, an appreciation of well-crafted words, an understanding of cyclic-movement in thought (The Eternal Golden Triangle: Bach, Esher, Gödel), and rhythmic-nuance in general. Even if you don't publish anything wild and crazy, it doesn't hurt to let loose a wild pen once in a while.
